IATSE 891 Basic Grips Instructor-Led Training

The Client:

IATSE Local 891 is a film worker’s union representing over 10,000 artists and technicians who work in the film and television production industry in British Columbia, Canada. They support most genres of production at all budget levels and have made some of the biggest feature films and some of the longest-running television series ever screened. Their award-winning members are internationally renowned for their skills and expertise.

The Challenge:

New members and permittees to the union aren’t necessarily familiar with how IATSE productions and the departments are run. They need training and onboarding materials to learn the procedures and avoid common mistakes that may make them appear to be unprofessional on set. Additionally, the Grip Department in particular has noticed a wide range of skills in their “entry-level” employee base. This course is designed to “level the playing field” so that all new employees have a similar basic skill-set.

The Project:

Because of the hands-on nature of the content being taught, this course consisted of two parts: a five-hour eLearning course and an eight-hour instructor-led workshop to be held in person. The workshop was designed to be a place where learners could review and then practice skills on real equipment under the watchful eye of senior Grips. The workshop contains whole-group activities as well as several breakout sessions to practice skills.

The Production Materials:

The workshop presentation and other deliverables were created using the Microsoft Office Suite, using assets from Canva. Deliverables included a master slide deck, trainer manual, glossary, and equipment list.

BBCon 2024

The Client:

n/a

The Challenge:

The client is a guest speaker at the bbcon convention hosted by Blackbaud. The company is in the midst of rebranding and updating additional materials and we were contracted to create the slide presentation using themes from the new brand kit.

The Project:

With source slides provided by the client, we created a 50+ slide presentation deck with the new template and branding information. Graphics had to be updated or rebuilt using the new specs.

The Production Materials:

This slide deck was created in Canva and then reformatted as a PowerPoint presentation for easier access.

Each Future at Beijing 80

The Client:

Each Future was a company that addressed the growing demand for American Education in China by recruiting American teachers for short workshops and summer camps. Beijing 80 is a Chinese and International school located near the embassy district in Beijing, China. It contains a middle school and high school as well as an International Baccalaureate program.

The Challenge:

The director of Beijing 80 contracted with Each Future to create a one-week-long staff development workshop about current American teaching trends such as STEM/STEAM and SATII. The director also wanted a two-week summer camp for high school freshmen planning on attending American universities after graduation. We would have the assistance of translators for both workshops, although many of the staff had at least some English Language proficiency and the students were even more adept.

The Project:

Together with another American team member, we created a three-hour, five-day workshop covering STEM teaching techniques. The workshop was given twice each day: once to the middle school cohort and once to the high school cohort. The parameters of the project shifted the evening before the staff workshop was to begin and SAT II information was eliminated.

Working with a separate team of two additional American members, we created a 6-hour, 12-day workshop for students. The student portion focused on English Language development as well as American Culture.

The Production Materials:

The workshop presentation and other deliverables were created using the Microsoft Office Suite using assets from SlidesCarnival and Unsplash.
